Just Another Messy Monday

As I type, I've got sour cream on my dress, a new batch of bug bites, a dreadlock in my hair, and I'm smelling baby puke somewhere on me. I think there's something dead in the backyard too. And I  had to kill a huge bug that got within a foot radius of my baby. It's just been one of those days- not bad, just busy and messy, very messy. Days like this should come with a girl scout type badge. I'll have to settle for an episode of "Clean House" on Netflix. Hey, a girl's got to dream...

My trusty diaper bag, always ready for the next adventure!

Play Time

Baby girl has started to be more aware of her surroundings. She's actually enjoying toys and interacting with them.

Monkey blankey feels soft and is easy to grab.

Two rattles: choose wisely

Jane discovered she could move the whole arm by putting her foot on it. Then she was able to kick the flower with her other foot and make it rattle. She repeated this action several times. Not bad for less than 4 months!

In Doubt

When in doubt, post a baby picture! This week has not been great. To add to it, I was headachey all yesterday. We still went out with friends and had a pretty nice evening celebrating a birthday. Of course, we had to leave half way through to get the kiddos. Jane has me on a short leash these days.

Today, I'm out of coffee and just feeling poor. The day started out well with a  playgroup, but then we had to go to a thing at Julian's school. It was not a fun experience. I don't like being cut in front of and I really don't like being talked down to.

When I think about my life right now, there are so many good things that I feel guilty at the things that get me down. This week, for all it's busyness and social happenings, left me longing for both alone time and a friend.

What Makes Jane Our Miracle Baby

I know we often refer to our baby girl as a “miracle baby”, but I don’t know if I’ve ever elaborated on that. A lot of people are aware of the circumstances that make her so, but I thought I’d share for those who don’t. It’s hard to even know where to start, so bear with me if this is a little long winded.

I’ve always wanted a daughter. Very shortly after Jason and I decided we were ready for a family, we conceived and we were both sure it would be a girl. When we found out that it was a boy, we were shocked, but excited.I couldn’t have imagined how much fun it’s been being a mom of a boy. I feel so very blessed to have my little man in my life and I'd never trade him for a girl!

Since we had no issues in getting pregnant with Juju, we assumed everything was working well and that more children would be right along. When Julian was about two, we felt like it was time for that to happen. Again we conceived fairly quickly and waited a few weeks to tell people we were expecting. We made the announcement and began to plan for baby number two. A few days shy of our second trimester, I miscarried. So began two and a half years of the cycle of hope, loss, and grieving.

We tried to figure out what was going wrong. Since we had no problem getting pregnant, many of the resources and tests that go with infertility did not apply to us. We ruled out most of the common causes for miscarriage and tried different things with each pregnancy. Since the miscarriages were not in the first few weeks of pregnancy, there was tissue available to test. We had samples from the pregnancies sent off to USF’s genetic research division to see if they could identify the issue.

I vividly remember the morning the geneticist called me. I was sitting at the computer, working on eBay listings, when the phone rang. It was explained to me that all the samples ended up being females with Trisomy 10. They concluded that the disorder was tied to the female DNA that either Jason or I was passing on. I was told that we could not successfully carry and have a girl baby and that with my age and all the pregnancies over the last few years being female, we’d be lucky to have another child at all. I remember trying to hold it together on the phone. As soon as I hung up with them, I Googled Trisomy 10 and cried while I read. It shares a lot of the characteristics of Downs Syndrome- only it’s not “compatible with life” so 100% of the babies with it die in utero.

I mourned the little girls I’d lost and the loss of any future daughters. I’d already prayed everything I knew to before we got the news so I took that as my answer and didn’t ask God to intervene. I didn’t know if I could bear more loss in pursuit of a successful boy baby pregnancy. I started looking at adoption, considering if Julian should be an only child, and just praying for direction. I began to take steps towards adoption because I had this feeling that our family was not complete, but stuff never seemed to line up right. In time, I came to peace with things as they were and I found faith that God would lead us to whatever was to meant for our family.

My grandmother passed away Christmastime, December of 2011.The day after her passing, I miscarried again, at 8 weeks along. We knew one of my grandfathers was not going to be far behind. I was too heartbroken to deal with more lost pregnancies and to be a good mom to 4 year old Juju, so we decided it would be best to try to not get pregnant again for awhile. I did end up losing both of my grandfathers that year.

We had a busy fall. I’d thrown myself into volunteering and being involved in my Etsy community. I felt very off, but I assumed it was just part of the grieving process plus my busyness plus Julian starting pre-k plus just a lot of changes going on. I was shocked to discover we were pregnant again. We’d been pretty careful to prevent such a thing, but as my dear husband likes to say, “Life finds a way.” I was with some of our dearest friends when I found out and the first thing we did was pray. I expected the worst, but the similarities to my pregnancy with Julian gave me a little hope. I was already almost 9 weeks along- my pregnancy with Julian had also caught me off guard. I was never ill (beyond being tired & my gestational diabetes) with Juju and this pregnancy was the same. With the lost pregnancies, I always felt very sick and knew very early on I was pregnant.

Despite a beautifully strong heartbeat, Jason and I couldn’t let ourselves get too excited. We were referred to a practice that dealt exclusively with high risk pregnancies so at least we knew we were in good hands. When we cleared the second trimester mark and made it to twenty weeks, I assumed it must be a boy baby. I really wanted to confirm that so we could celebrate a little and not worry so much. (I can’t tell you how nerve wracking it is to search your toilet paper for signs of blood every single time you use the restroom!) When the technician cheerfully announced that it looked like a girl, Jason and I both incredulously told her to look again. She did so, and after consulting my chart, one of the doctors even had a look and confirmed it.

My emotions went from unbelievable happiness to fear to gratefulness and even to sadness. The next visit, I saw my regular OB. He also works with several study groups at USF and is one of the countries top doctors in researching new treatments for gestational diabetes. He had our genetic testing results and reviewed them again after the baby’s gender was identified. He told me that, on paper, this pregnancy shouldn’t be happening.

We were asked to have a lot of tests done, but I knew that no matter what ending the pregnancy was not an option. We decided to just wait and watch and if something looked wrong, we’d monitor it so we’d at least be prepared for whatever conditions our baby might be born with. Appointment after appointment, the baby looked perfectly normal. Her heartbeat was strong and her measurements were as they should be. My health was terrible, but she was thriving. Because it was a high risk pregnancy, I had ultrasounds about every other week of the third trimester. Every time I got to see baby girl felt like a little victory.

Jane Marie was born on May 12, 2013. Jane means “God is gracious”. She had some blood sugar issues, but otherwise was completely healthy. She continues to develop normally and there’s no reason to believe she won’t continue to do so.

I don’t use the word “miracle” lightly. I believe in miracles, but never thought they were something that someone like me would ever experience in person. I do think it applies to our situation though. The fact is our genetic code is broken. That was evident not just in one sample, but every single one. I believe God miraculously corrected that defect in Jane. It wasn’t because we deserved it or asked Him to- I’d written it off as not possible and moved on. Why He chose to intervene isn’t something I can readily identify. I do know that I am changed for the better after having gone through the struggles. I think my marriage is stronger. I also know that just about every time I look at Jane, I feel like I could burst with gratitude. Through her birth, God restored my broken heart and has given my entire community a reminder that He still does great things.

What's with all the Drool?!

The last few days our sweet little girl has been fussy. She's normally only cried when she's hungry or having gas pains so I was hoping we weren't entering a stage where she just cried a lot over little things. She also just started sucking on her whole hand versus the couple fingers she liked before. I started to suspect she might be teething, but when I looked it up it said that this didn't usually happen until 6 months. I also looked up the symptoms and she's doing just about all the behaviorisms. I peaked in her mouth, but it's so tiny, I really couldn't see much so I was forced to run my finger along her gums. Sure enough, there are tooth buds on the top and bottom and there's even a part of a tooth erupting from her top right gum. My darling is teething! I'm relieved that's what it is, but I remember it not being a pleasant time when Julian was cutting his choppers. Oh, well, what can you do? I am a little concerned about nursing something with incisors!

Jane's got her mom's little ankles and feet (Not a word about the thighs though!)

She's very generous with the smiles

Even with the teething, she's still so good natured.

All in a Week

August 7

The new guy. Julian has named him Joseph, which is funny considering that's what I wanted to name the baby if it was a boy!

August 6

Yeah, this is pretty much the gravitational center of "cuteness'.

August 5
Catching up on some correspondence. It's been a bit of an exciting, but lonely summer.

August 4
She's found her fingers, not her thumb, but her two middle fingers. Can't complain about a self-soothing baby though!

August 3
A life lived really, really well.

August 2
Jason's pick for birthday his celebration. My phone camera just would not function in the "mood lighting" so no people photos. J received some very interesting gifts!

Getting More Out of Baby's Wardrobe

It's no secret that I'm a pretty thrifty person. If I'm going to spend, I better get my money's worth. It drives me a little crazy how fast the kids go through their clothes, specifically Jane right now. She's out of her newborn clothes already!
Because it's summer and a hot one at that, I'm mainly putting Jane in lightweight dresses. I like that look anyway. At this point in the summer, a lot of stores are moving their summer clothes out for fall inventory. This means great clearance sales! Now Jane is a lucky gal and was given a ton of clothes, so I've pretty much restrained myself, but I did pick up a thing or two last week. I was looking for mainly shirts in toddler sizes that could work as dresses now. It's a way that she can get a year or two out of each piece instead of a few months.

Baby Gap floral- Tops with shoulder ties work well, as you can cinch up the top to make it the right size.

Aqua stripes from Baby Gap- this style neckline usually works well.

Navy stripes from Baby Gap- these look cute with leggings and a sweater when the weather cools

Oppander crochet & floral- If a piece has shoulder straps with buttons on the bottom, you can criss-cross them to shorten them.

Old Navy stripes & dots- Any straps can be shortened by using safety pins to pin the extra material in the back, inside. If you prefer a more finished look, you can detach thestraps at the bottom backs, add buttons to the back inside of the dress and put button holes in the straps.
Baby Gap- If you sew, you can pinch up the extra collar fabric at the shoulders and sew a temporary hem that can be let out eventually.

Wrapping Up July

July 30

Etsy sales have slowed this month, so I'm grateful for the ones I got this week!

July 29
My healthy breast-fed baby! It's such a relief that things are going well in that respect.

July 28
This is an "Ironman" costume that Julian pulled together. Yes, those are hats on his feet. I wish I had his limitless imagination still!

It's All Roses

I listed a few vintage art pieces in my Etsy shop today. It's the first stuff I've listed since before May. It's still hard to do with Jane needing so much attention. Still, I was happy to just be back at it. One of things I listed is a needlework rose piece. There's something Victorian about it. Roses have that classic beauty that just exudes romance no matter what century or culture is portraying them. Here's a few picks from my shop and a few other favorites from Etsy. You can click on the caption to go to their listings.

One Month!

Jane is one month old tomorrow! It's gone quickly for the most part. Well, there have been some very long nights, but that's to be expected. I've absolutely loved putting her in all the pretty clothes everyone got for her. Here's today's little dress:

While I haven't shut down my Etsy shops, I definitely haven't listed anything new. I can't get my head into it yet. With Julian off school, it might not be until the end of the summer before I'm able to really put the necessary time into it. My good friend is curating an exhibit at the main Clearwater library and wanted to include a piece of my jewelry so at least I'm not completely inactive with it all. Here's the necklace we decided on:

Lastly I wanted to give an invite to all my Tampa Bay friends. My Etsy team is hosting the annual Etsy Craft Party for the area. It's open to the public and free to attend. There will be craft demos, food trucks, a good representation of local vendors, and more. We have the coolest location- St. Pete Shuffle- so you can also play shuffleboard to your heart's content. It's going to be just a fun time all around! Follow this link for more details.

Baby Jane is here!

Last Sunday, Mother's Day, I got quite a surprise when my water unexpectedly broke early and started Jane's entry into the world. She was born that night and weighed in at 9 lbs, 3 oz. She's tall like her brother- at almost 22 inches.

Julian's still figuring out the big brother thing

She's 1 week old today!

Nesting

For those unfamiliar with the odd swings and patterns of pregnancy, "nesting" refers to an expectant mother’s instinct to prepare her home for baby. It actually gives a surge of energy which propels her to clean and do various chores around the home. It is very real and it is something that those around the momma just have to get on board with or get out of the way of. Thankfully, I have an incredibly helpful husband as a partner. I can point him in a direction and leave him alone until he finishes the job. This weekend the biggest job was assembling furniture!

A nice little assistant- excuse the crappy phone photo!

We have a cozy little house so we'll all have to adjust to make room for baby girl. As long as she'll fit in the bassinet, she'll stay in our room. After that, she and Julian will share until we can do the addition. That's a few years in coming, so for the time being, it's close quarters. Julian has an armoire so we barely use his closet. Really the best use of that space was to put Jane's dresser and supplies in it instead. It took a bit of work to get that all together, but it's done and everything is laundered and put away. I feel relieved that it's done. We still have to move a few things around in our room and clean, clean, clean, but we're in good shape should the little miss arrive early.
Love all the cute dresses & outifts and having them all hung up on display!

Latest Appointment

Had another appointment this morning. I had them check again to make sure our little darling is for sure a girl. I've already got mommy-goggles and think she's adorable- even though the ultrasound images are a little creepy! The technician said she was 100% sure that baby is indeed female, so I guess we can really start planning for Baby Jane! She's on target for everything.

I'm doing pretty good too- although the weight thing is slightly off. I'm supposed to have gained about 10 lbs by this point. Last appointment, I'd gained 3 and they encouraged me to eat more and try to add another pound in the month before my appointment today. I have zero appetite, but I didn't skip meals and I eat snacks and have switched to whole milk. I'm eating cream cheese and sour cream and full fat cheese and everything I can that doesn't make my blood sugar spike. My scale at home didn't register a change so I drank a ton of liquid before my appointment and kept my boots on when I weighed. And it showed I lost a half pound instead of gaining any. I think my weight is just redistributing itself. My stomach is totally popping out now and my upper body (chin included, unfortunately) are definitely bigger!

We got a bassinet dropped off today too so that added to the excitement. It's very nice and was given to us by a friend. Here's the stock photo of it:

It's so strange and exciting to really be planning for another family member. For the last couple years I really believed we wouldn't be in this position again.

Pretty New Thing

I have to post a photo of the first little girl thing I have for my baby! The simple design and the Asian fabrics are so my style.

PS- While this dress is not available, you can see more of Lishyloo's stuff on her Etsy shop.

Why I haven't posted lately...

Messy Messy

Friday, September 28th~

My stressful mess...

This is what an eBay week looks like. It drives me nuts for my business stuff to overflow and get all over the house, but really this house is way too small to run any sort of business out of. Hopefully most of this pile will sell. I've decided not to buy or shop for any more inventory until I get my living spaces back.

The sad thing is if I let go of all the baby stuff, I'd have room. I'm worried that as soon as I do though, something will happen that we would need it. Maybe that's wishful thinking. When we got all that stuff, we got really good quality because we expected to use it for more than just one baby. =(

Happy Birthday, Puppy!

September 21st~ Happy birthday, Drago! My little buddy turns 12 approximately today. When I got him I was still finishing school. He was the cutest fluff of a puppy ever. It was love at first sight. He's been my furkid ever since. It hasn't always been smooth sailing; he's had terrible allergies from age 4+. He's been twice attacked by German Shepherds. He's also had some pretty significant eye injuries. He's had to weather a baby, then grabby toddler for a brother. Still, at this very moment, we've got the allergies better controlled, his eyes are healed, and his fur is thicker than it's been in years. Things are going well for the old boy. I remember people saying we'd get rid of him when we had a kid. Boy, were they wrong!

The Last Shower

Saturday, June 9th~
Okay- my photos are getting farther and farther off subject! Anyway, I've been trying to get a photo of the squirrel for days. Someone or something has shaved all the hair from the middle of it's tail. It's both awful and funny.

Another baby shower... I helped host this one so it's a little easier to be distracted from my own situation. This should be the last one for awhile. I'm still kind of amazed at what big showers are thrown for second and even third children. This one was smaller and not like that, but I've been to some that are way over the top.

We wanted to do something fun as a family before Julian and I leave town. Jason had a paying gig last night, so we used that money to go out for dinner and a movie. We saw Madagascar 3. Jason and I were not impressed, but Julian seemed to like it. Well, except for the part when the big, stupid bear is sad. That upset him greatly. He is one empathetic little guy!

Growing Up Fast

Tuesday, April 17, 2012~

April 17, 2012

Sometimes it really hits me how much Julian has grown in the last year. I mean there is absolutely no Baby Juju left. You can watch a few of these videos to see where he was at last April and just the physical changes alone are crazy.
There's a temptation to almost mourn those passed years and dwell on not having another baby. I don't want to do that though. I want to just be thankful for what an awesome kid I do have and celebrate the age he's at right now. His imagination is glorious at this age!
