Go Workout, Mom! (And Don’t Feel Bad About It)

Fun Halloween themed Zumba night

There are a lot of things that there is mommy guilt over, but working out should not be one of those things. I’ve had people question me about my gym schedule and how I get away for that much time and I just laugh and say I carve and guard that time out vigilantly and it’s been good for me and my family. These are the reasons why.

First of all they don’t see their dad until he gets home from work. The nights that I am at the gym gives them time with him. It lets them know that their needs can be met by more than just mommy. My kids are used to it, but kids will come up with a lot of things that they want mommy to do and a lot of reasons why you should stay with them. The reasons are often valid and sweet, but at the end of the day, someone else can do those things as just well. I think it’s good for dads to share responsibility for the children and our routine is that when I’m gone, dad does bedtime. It’s a good thing. It’s a great example for my boy and my girl that marriage is teamwork. That includes kid duties, house duties, work, etc..

My biggest reason is that a healthy mom is a happier mom. I had some pretty big bouts of depression in the past. At one point my son was playing “mommy“ and he laid on the couch and wrapped his head in a blanket and that just floored me. Kids pick up on these things. I have a lot more patience and a lot less down days when I get those exercise endorphins. And physically being able to keep up with them and have more energy for family time is no doubt a benefit.

I also want to set a good example for the kids. A lifestyle that includes physical fitness is something that I hope they will follow in their lives. The mental health benefits as well as the physical health benefits of routine exercise are undeniable. My kids have not hit puberty yet, but I have struggled with weight issues since I did and working out has helped so much to keep that in check. Since both of them are so young, I’m not sure what their metabolism and genes will do, but I like to think that the expectation that exercise is part of life will help them with whatever that ends up being.

One of the biggest benefits that I’ve seen, especially when I was doing the stay at home mom thing, was that it gave me an outlet for meeting other adults. I craved adult conversation and just meeting people that also made working out a priority. I’ve made so many friends and people I never would have met otherwise. Many of these people have become good friends and so many fun social opportunities have opened up. Some people prefer to run or do more solo activities, but even if you are not doing group classes like I do, you can still find a supportive community amongst others who do the same.

There are lots of other reasons, but I’m going to end it by with saying that carving out time for myself has allowed me to maintain my personhood. I like being a wife and mom, but I am still a whole person apart from that. That’s another example I want to give the kids. I can still be a partner and parent without completely sacrificing the things that I enjoy. Too many moms make themselves martyrs and think that they’re giving their family a magical experience by doing so when in fact it just leads to a stressed out, thankless serfdom. And what is left when the kids do grow up and move away? Claiming time now and having them acknowledge that mom is also a human being teaches them how to treat people and themselves when they are grown.

I’d love to hear thoughts from you on this topic as well!

2 More Days!

I'm reading through the packet we got from Julian's school yesterday and I just feel overwhelmed. The car line chart alone is daunting. One of the reasons I like this school so much is the level of parent involvement they require- I just did not consider how it pertained to me! Really, it's not so bad, taken day by day. It's just a lot of information all at once. Jason's taking him in the mornings so I only actually have to deal with half of that car line chart. Thank you, Jason!

As much as I'm a little verklempt at my little boy entering his elementary years, I'm also to the point in the summer where I am ready for it to start already! Here's the top 10 phrases I used the most in the last three months:

1. "Did you wipe?"
2. "That's too rough for your sister."
3. "Pick it up!!!"
4. "STOP!"
5. "Don't touch me until you wash your hands."
6. "What is that?!"
7. "Don't put that in your mouth."
8. "You are getting so tall!"
9. "How's your rash?"
10. "I love you so much!"

Here are Julian's most used phrases:

1. "Mom, did you see me?"
2. "Can I have some of that?"
3. "I see your boobies." [The joys of breastfeeding...]
4. "Can I watch Ben 10?"
5. "I don't know."
6. "Why aren't you doing what I want you to do?!"
7. "Invisible Julian has/does/is...."
8. "Can you scratch my rash?"
9. "I'm the fastest in the world!"
10. "Guess what?"

I know I'll miss this time and age, but right now, I'm going a bit nuts!

What's with all the Drool?!

The last few days our sweet little girl has been fussy. She's normally only cried when she's hungry or having gas pains so I was hoping we weren't entering a stage where she just cried a lot over little things. She also just started sucking on her whole hand versus the couple fingers she liked before. I started to suspect she might be teething, but when I looked it up it said that this didn't usually happen until 6 months. I also looked up the symptoms and she's doing just about all the behaviorisms. I peaked in her mouth, but it's so tiny, I really couldn't see much so I was forced to run my finger along her gums. Sure enough, there are tooth buds on the top and bottom and there's even a part of a tooth erupting from her top right gum. My darling is teething! I'm relieved that's what it is, but I remember it not being a pleasant time when Julian was cutting his choppers. Oh, well, what can you do? I am a little concerned about nursing something with incisors!

Jane's got her mom's little ankles and feet (Not a word about the thighs though!)

She's very generous with the smiles

Even with the teething, she's still so good natured.

A Great Day

May 25, 2012~

This is as still as he got, so I'm ignoring the goofy face!
I felt some sort of mission to give Julian a really, really great day today. We started out by putting a couple hours in at Future Flipz. Julian was starving by the end of that so we went home and made sandwiches together. We looked up some sea creatures on the internet and then tracked down an Octonauts episode we'd never seen before. Jason had a half day so he came home during Julian's quiet time. When that was over, we let Julian pick a movie to watch with daddy so Kung Fu Panda 2 went on. He was ready to play outside when the movie ended. That didn't go so well. (The little girl next store proved herself quite the bully so that's not going to be a place he'll be playing any more.) He came in a tearful and sweaty and hungry so we cleaned him up and headed off for dinner.

We had an Arigato's Groupon and thought Julian would find it a lot of fun. He did. He kept saying it was "awesome" and telling us what a good day it was. (I love that he was so appreciative and voiced it!) Arigato's is right next door to Toys R' Us so he about died of happiness when he realized we were pulling in the parking lot. He wasn't even sad that we weren't buying anything. He was so tired by the time we got home that Jason had to carry him in. It is a challenge to wear that kid out, but I succeeded today!

Part of me wishes every day could be like this and that we could just move from one delightful Julian-pleasing things to another, but I know that's not a good way to raise a child. The world does not and never will revolve around him and does not exist to amuse us. I am not his concierge and we're not about to go further into debt to hear him say, "Awesome!". I've observed families that do live that way and there's not much gratitude after awhile, anyway. So the point is, a great day is only great when it's out of the ordinary.

Mother's Day

Sunday, May 13th~

Mother's Day! We kept busy. I still missed my mom though! Although it's a day to honor moms, it's not a day that moms to get any sort of break. That would be a true holiday! I can't complain though. We had a fun family lunch and then spent the evening poolside with friends. The guys grilled so that was nice. The pool was good, but I'm craving the beach. I think I need to get there this week. I'm a water girl- always have been, always will be. I think if I could spend a Mother's Day any way I wanted to, it would have to end with a sunset on the beach.

Anyway, being a mom is great and I'm very, very happy for the opportunity. Being a parent is very eye-opening. You have to wise up and get your priorities straight. You understand love on such a different level. It changes you in many ways. Even after all the changes, you find yourself constantly wondering if you're doing things right and well!
