Halloween on My Mind

Amazing how much fun a simple Happy Meal mask can be! We're just a couple weeks away so Halloween in on my mind a lot. It's cheesy, but we kind of like to have a family theme. We let Juju pick what he wants to be and then plan around that.We were all Green Lanterns last year.

This year Julian wanted to be a giant squid. We'd also decided to participate in our church's Trunk or Treat so it was an easy choice to do an ocean theme for that. I will be attempting to make some sort of jellyfish costume for myself. Jane has a cute mermaid outfit and Jason is trying to pull together some sort of salty sea captain look. Hope it all comes together! If you'd like to check out the results in person, Trunk or Treat is Wednesday, October 30th, 6:30 pm to 8 pm at Skycrest Community Church.

Pinellas Places Parents Shouldn't Miss!

I feel so lucky to live in an area that has a lot of things to do, especially since so many of those things are for families. The Mommy & Me group from my church has spent Monday mornings this summer down in Largo. We meet at the wonderful Largo Central Park and then when it gets too warm (or the gobs of day cares turn up), we head to the library across the street. They have a children's wing that is really fantastic. The kids aren't shushed constantly and there is a nice play area for the younger lot. Julian's getting a bit big for it so he's now on the computers playing games. When Jane's old enough, we'll start doing some of the library's fun mid-morning kid programs. Too Early

Sunday, September 30th~ in which general exhaustion ensued... Not my best day, but it was a good day church-wise. I'm starting my holiday selling season tomorrow. It's exciting, but it also means a crazy schedule from now until the end of the year. I'm already looking forward to our little Thanksgiving trip. =)

Beach Date

Thursday, September 20th~

Another bad night, but today was still excellent. I started it with my ladies group at church. That was great. Later Julian and I had a beach date. It was just the two of us and no time constraints so we had a nice dinner and just spent hours playing in the water. He's a water body, like me. =) I can tell the swim lessons he took this summer have helped his confidence in the water. He went out by himself a little and was nonplussed when he'd get a wave right in the face. It really was a nice relaxing afternoon and evening. I love that he's at an age to enjoy days like this too.

I left the camera at home as I don't want it anywhere near sand! I have a thing for Asian watercolor prawn artwork. Maybe I associate it with the amazing giant prawns I had in Thailand at the best seafood restaurant I've ever been to. Or maybe it's how armored they look. Either way, it's not a theme you find all over the place. January, in St. Augustine, I found a small vintage bowl with a pair of prawns painted on it. I got it to use as shell bowl. Then this morning I spotted this set of 6 shallow bowls at a thrift store right around the corner to Juju's school. They're the perfect size for peel and eat shrimp or steamed clams. Best of all, the elderly lady pricing things, thought these were "ugly bugs" and had them priced at $1 apiece!!! She was pretty shocked when I snatched them up the moment she set them down.

A Good Thursday

Thursday, September 6, 2012~

   Feeling better today. The day started rough, I won't lie, but after Julian got over his snit this morning, things vastly improved. My Thursday morning group at church started up again. I'm part of a "guinea pig" group this time around. We're doing Warren Wiersbe's study on the book of John and that's not unusual. The part that's different is that it's a small group that requires each member to set a weekly personal goal and a goal that requires us to go above and beyond our usual habits. We're also committing to monthly service projects for our community. There's a high level of accountability within the group. I've mentioned before that I'm pretty burnt out on long book studies so this is a great fit for where I am and where my heart has always been.
   I left as soon as we'd finished so I could get up to Tampa. I do love seeing my former co-workers at Family First. It's been 4 years since I worked there and I still think about them and the programs all the time. I don't know when I'll go back to work full time, but it's a little dream of mine to be able to work there again. Anyway, I had lunch with my dear friend Amy. We had such encouraging conversation. It really made my week!
   Tomorrow I've got a fun morning and afternoon planned with another good friend. We're headed to St. Pete. I think Jason is craving Delco's so we may end up there too. What a good way to finish this week of ups and downs!

Getting a better feel for the new camera. I'm excited to have a lot to list on eBay this weekend!

I don't know when the age comes when kids don't want to go to church. We literally have to drag Julian off the premises. He asks every single day if we can go. I guess that means he's having a positive experience! At this point it's mostly a social thing, but he does come home talking about God and occasionally will sing something he's learned. I'm curious to see if he will at some point fight it. I think that might depend on if he chooses to become a christian or not.

R & R

Sunday, April 29th~

We all need days to just relax. Thanks to my in-laws, who took Julian for the night, Jason and I got to sleep in a little before heading to service. We had a leisurely lunch with them and then just relaxed the afternoon away. Our community group meets in the evening so we wrapped up the day with that. It was much needed. God knew what He was doing when he gave us a day of rest!

Genesis 2:2

On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work.

Matthew 11:28–30

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.

Hebrews 4:9-11

There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall through following the same example of disobedience.

Food Day

Love having a freezer full of quick meals!

Had a great afternoon at Dinner Done with some friends today. It's the meal prep place that I happen to prefer. The only real drawback to places like this is that it's not cheap. For a family our size, we split the entrees so that makes it much more affordable. Tonight we had one of the entrees I made. It was steak stuffed with sun-dried tomato and spinach and then topped with adobo seasoning and feta cheese. Soooo yummy!

Easter Christian Traditions, continued... Today there aren't many traditions that all Christians do for Easter. It is known as Bright Saturday. A lot of churches do egg hunts, but this has no biblical basis. Often the egg is used to illustrate the 3 in 1 nature of the Trinity. Some more conservative groups oppose the practice as it is rooted in paganism. Some Catholic churches follow the Byzantine Rites for this day.

Maundy Thursday

It's crazy to me that I have to plan my calendar a month in advance. I can only imagine how crazy it will be when Julian is in school! I am excited to start inviting people to my next jewelry party. (Click on the photo for details!)

So today is Maundy Thursday. I didn't grow up really acknowledging the day much so I had to do a little research about it. There is no historical account outside of the Bible of the events of this evening so I will just mention the traditions that are commonly held. Maundy Thursday commemorates the last Passover supper Jesus shared with his disciples on the night before He was crucified. Some churches hold quiet candlelight services. These services can observe any or all of these 3 traditions: foot washing*, communion**, a traditional Passover Seder meal***.

*Before the Passover supper, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. By performing this lowly act of service, the Bible says in John 13:1 that Jesus "showed them the full extent of his love." By his example, Jesus demonstrated how Christians are to love one another through humble service.

**During the meal, Jesus took bread and wind and asked His Father to bless it. He broke the bread into pieces, giving it to his disciples and said, "This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." Then he took the cup of wine, shared it with his disciples and said, "This wine is the token of God's new covenant to save you--an agreement sealed with the blood I will pour out for you." These events are recorded in Luke 22:19-20 and are the Biblical basis for the practice of communion. For this reason, many churches hold special Communion services as a part of their Maundy Thursday celebrations.
