Repurposing Vintage Ashtrays

Vintage ashtrays… beautiful, uniquely shaped, abundant and affordable in most thrift shops- it's a smoker's dream!  But what if you are not a smoker? Do you sadly put it down and walk away? I know if the piece is absolutely stunning, there's no way I'm leaving it. Once home though, what's to be done with an old ashtray?  I have thought long and hard about this and experimented and I've come up with a few ideas.

• Succulent planter
• Holder for buttons, baubles and curiosities
• Kitchen sponge holder
• Catchall for change or keys
• Jewelry keeper

 • Soap dish
 • Candle holder
 • Barrette and hair clip keeper
 • Desk holder for paper clips, thumb tacks, stamps, etc.
 • Taller trays can hold cosmetics tubes or brushes

The one thing you do not want to do though, is use it  with any sort of food. These are not made out of products intended to be used for food and can have lead and other hazardous products that can leech into food.

If you've used a vintage ashtray for something unique, please share!

What a Find!

I love a good thrift store find. They are getting very rare for me though. Mostly because I haven't even gone to a thrift store in months- also because a lot more people are thrifting so the pickings are slim. I didn't plan to stop this morning, but I thought I might find another pair of uniform pants or shorts for Julian. In my calculations, I didn't factor in that he'd need a set of "accident" clothes. I ended up at a store that I don't even like that much. They price everything in anticipation of the one day a month when it's all half off. Anyway, I did find a pair of suitable pants for Juju and then a pair of shoes caught my eye. I have little feet and I can wear kids sizes. These fit perfectly! (I know, I know, thrift store shoes- ick, BUT for the right shoe, you can always throw in insoles and they're fine.) Here's my find:

Love the hand embroidering!

The last photo was artistic, this is a better view! They have hand stitched rag soles too.

Find of the Day

from April 12, 2012~

Did a little thrifting today. My friend Heather spotted these excellent Doc Martens. Definitely my favorite purchase of the day! We also found an interesting collection of bolo ties and a burl wood cork screw. Love quirky stuff like that.
