Suncoast Primate Sanctuary

As much as I can, I'm trying to make sure Julian doesn't feel neglected with the new baby around. For the last couple years, I'd intended on checking out the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary, so when I heard some of my girlfriends were heading there, we definitely had to go. It's not a zoo and doesn't have a zoo's budget. It is a place for animals that have no where else to go. It's all outdoors and while the cages are very clean, the dirt paths are not. It took us about an hour to go through. We probably would have stayed longer if it wasn't so hot. I would recommend a visit here- just know it's not a zoo and you aren't going to see the animals in natural habitats and you do want to bring sun block and bug spray. The volunteers are great though and the animals are healthy and entertaining.

Chimpanzees

There's also a collection of alligators and turtles. Julian isn't big on alligators as you can see from his response!

This little boy-monkey was loose in the bamboo.

Our own little Jane Goodall slept through the whole thing.

Julian & Aaron taking in all the parrots

This gorgeous orangutan was really alert and watchful. He kept moving to where people were.

Of all the cool things in the sanctuary, the boys, of course, were most interested in this stagnate rock pond.

The loudest monkey in the place!
Today is Jason's birthday, so after gobs of hand sanitizer, we met him for lunch.

Julian's still pretty much in monkey mode!

I Love Lamp

August 28, 2012~
Look what I found! This lamp was still sitting in an unsorted box at one of my favorite thrift stores. It was untested and unpriced. When I took it up to the check out, I put on my sternest "I'm still deciding" face and asked how much. The lady barely glanced at it before she said "$4.99". Then all porcelain was half off and I had 10% off my whole order. I got this for $2.25. How is that even possible?! When I got home and tested it and saw that it worked- I really couldn't believe it! Of course, it has a very old plug and wiring so I'll want to replace that and put a new base and shade on it, but even with all that it's a great deal. Here's a comparable one going for $150 on Etsy.

Not quite sure where it's going to end up being

That bird is giving the stink eye

My Thanks

July 21, 2012~

My Thanks

People everywhere in life
From every walk and station,
From every town and city
And every state and nation
Have given me so many things
Intangible and dear,
I couldn't begin to count them all
Or even make them clear...
I only know I owe so much
To people everywhere
And when I put my thoughts in verse
It's just a way to share
The musings of a thankful heart,
A heart much like your own,
For nothing I think or write
Is mine and mine alone...
So if you found some beauty
In any word or line,
It's just your soul's reflection
In proximity with mine.

Put a Bird on It!

Thursday, June 28, 2012~ I was watching some Portlandia clips and one of my favorite bits is the Put a Bird On It song. I love sparrows and peacocks and robins so I kind of like a cute bird motif, but I have seen the stuff on Etsy that inspired the video!  I'm not sure this is a new trend though. I've sold a lot of vintage items decorated with birds. I just glanced through my shop and, yup, there is still a bunch of bird stuff !

 (^The "photo-of-the-day", btw...)

Do you ever "put a bird on it"? Do you have a favorite kind of bird?

Fans

from June 26, 2012~  Just after my wedding, I found 2 boxes of Asian hand fans at a thrift store. I added them to my collection and promptly forgot about them. Nowadays, I'm more in a clear out than collect mode so when I came across these again, I immediately thought they'd be great to sell. Then I started opening them to see if the were moldy or torn. They are not... and they are gorgeous, yes, every single one has a unique, detailed watercolor print on it. I'm having serious second thoughts about letting them go. I do help with events now and then so I may just hold on to these a bit longer. They don't take up too much room. =)
