Test Bathroom- Pinterest Style

Tuesday, April 10, 2012~

So I love trying all those Pinterest cleaning solutions. I last posted about using baking soda to clean grout, you can read that one here. Today I tried the "magic" tub and shower solution (originally on this blog) which claims to erase soap scum and hard water stains and leave your faucets super shiny. I also tried the explosive shower head cleaner (originally on this blog) which is supposed to completely eradicate any build up on your shower heads and unclog it too. Here's my thoughts:

The Magic Tub & Shower Cleaner is 10 oz of Dawn dish detergent (it's got to be the original blue formula) added to 12 oz of white vinegar that's been heated until it's hot. It is pretty fabulous. I have an old shower that gets a lot of use and this just erased any soap scum or hard water stains. The hardware did get nice and shiny too. Now, it does smell intense and you have to rinse it well, but it definitely rivals all the store bought products I've tried.

The Explosive Shower Head Cleaner is 1/3 cup baking soda and 1 cup white vinegar in a plastic bag tied onto the shower head. It is messy so put the ingredients together slowly over a sink. I used a Ziploc bag and a rubber band to keep it on. It suggests you keep it on 2-3 hours. I left it on almost 4 hours. I did still see lime deposits when I took the plastic off, but when I gave it a little scrub, almost all of it came off. It also did a good job of opening all the nozzles.

I'll definitely try this. I hardly use any chemicals in the shower anymore. I've found that the key is in understanding the biology of mildew. It likes WET places, so the trick is to remove water. I have a squeegee and a towel for the bathroom wall tiles and glass. Used after every shower, there is no need for bleach etc. To this day, 5 years and counting, all our bathrooms are mildew and chemical-free!

I am def gonna try the shower head thing! our water is SUPER hard and we have so many deposits..do you know of any toilet bowl cleaners? We get nasty stains from the well water and with our own septic system it's best for us not to use commercial cleaners

I used the top solution to clean my toilet too. It's taken using it for a few weeks, but it's definitely lightened the stain.
