Big Ship

Sold my lovely black velvet matador painting this week. I'm happy about that, there wasn't a place for it here. I just panicked when I realized I had to ship the big guy! I've been selling on eBay and even Etsy for quite sometime. Nothing stresses me out like shipping large objects so I usually don't list stuff that's bigger than a few square feet.

I managed to frankenstein together two large boxes and I used lots of bubble wrap and what seemed like a whole roll of good packing tape. The painting is secure, but the packaging isn't very pretty. I hope the buyer isn't put off by that.

So anybody have any helpful tips for me? Even if someone could point me in the direction of where to get large, flat boxes, that would be appreciated too as I currently have a couple other paintings up in my shop.

In other news: The Fortunate Home is the Tampa Bay Etsy Crew Member of the Week!

I know exactly what you mean. And, sorry I do not have good advice on that area. If anyone lets you know, please post here so I can know too. I also have pictures and fragile pieces not listed because I am in fear of not shipping securely. So, if you have a method for shipping your fragiles securely please let me know that also, thanks!

For fragile stuff, I usually wrap is in a couple layers of bubble wrap and go over that with packing tape. Then I use a thick cardboard box and use either newspaper, packing peanuts or shredded paper to fill in around it. I've yet to have something arrive broken.

Try Sams, Costco or appliance stores. Timing is the key but I have snagged nice LARGE, flat boxes at those places. The painting is lovely!

Love your phrase "Frankenstein together"!
That's what I do too!
It's a pain but I don't know of other options.
At least we're recycling! :)

A box inside a box is one solution for protecting art. UHaul companies have boxes for framed art. Use cardboard and wrap it around the art for the inside layer. Use the UHaul art box for the outer box. Use as much padding inside as you feel comfortable with. Insure it.

If it's a more expensive art item, then take it to FedEx or UPS and let them pack it. Then insure it.

Really expensive - crate it. Insure it.

I also sell large wall art and have had this trouble.. I recently was surprised to find large (semi) flat boxes on Amazon! I believe the ones I purchased last week were 24x30x4 in bulk working out to about $2-3 each. Because they are a little deeper than I had wanted, I've had to use a few extra layers of bubble wrap. But they look much better for customers than my previous "Frankenstein" packaging method, lol..
